KEY FEATURES

Play Your Way In the Biggest Battlefield Ever! From city streets to open rural landscapes, Battlefield 3 offers unparalleled depth and gameplay variety. Classic ‘Rush’ and ‘Conquest’ modes are complemented by newly introduced ‘Team Death Match’ for an instant action fix.

Extensive Co-op Campaign: Unique maps and missions are available for players to tackle online with a friend, using co-op specific gameplay features. Co-op missions tie into the single player story.

Powerful Social Features in Battlelog: Players will never go into battle alone thanks to the powerful new community features of Battlelog. Players can build their platoon, communicate with other gamers, and compare their multiplayer prowess with friends and foes alike. Battlelog is free on all platforms.

Frostbite 2-Enabled Destruction: Frostbite 2 creates a whole new level of life-like destruction. Enhanced large and small scale destruction now has a tactical purpose. Chip away at cover, blow holes in walls, deform the terrain, and bring down entire building façades on enemies.

Ultimate Vehicle Warfare: The signature Battlefield vehicle warfare experience is even richer and more rewarding. Damaged vehicles can now retreat or be defended until they automatically regain armor, while disabled vehicles become static gun platforms to cover players doing repairs.

Accessible Team-Play: Battlefield 3 offers fine-tuned team-play possibilities and accessibility for newcomers. Team-play is key for players to reach dominance on the battlefield.

Personalized Dog Tags: Players can express their individuality with their own dog tag that gets displayed to defeated enemies. Players choose a design with a dynamically tracked in-game stat that expresses their personality and play-style.

The Physical Battlefield: Use the environment to your advantage. Deploy your machine gun bipods on any mountable surface for greater accuracy. Claim the dog tag of enemies via skillful knife takedowns. Lay down suppressive fire to limit the combat capabilities of enemies.

Enhanced Persistence: There is always a new rank or reward to unlock in Battlefield 3. The depth and vast range of unlockable weapons, vehicles, upgrades, and tools will keep Battlefield 3 players occupied for years to come.

The mission, named “Exfiltration,” starts with myself and Alex slipping out of some armed transports and into a building being reappropriated for hostage duty. An important gentleman is being held inside, and we’ve gotta sneak in (or roar in, depending on how you like it) to extract him. While sneaking, we could carefully plan our attack and take out conveniently paired guards — or, as we learned after a few failures, you could simply run through guns blazing as a single soldier. Wait, isn’t this a co-op mission?

The incentive towards co-op play got thinner as we extracted the target and headed back outside to our transport. As we rolled down the road to our next objective, gunfire broke out and enemies dotted verandas, hunkered down behind cover, and took fire from all angles. While harrowing, and quite technically impressive, the concept of cooperative play seemed lost in the mix. Sure, we were fighting together towards our next objective, but other than that, where was the mutual dependency?

Given the demo’s difficulty, we didn’t make it much further than halfway through, with a gunfight continuing as we lurched through the streets of a Middle Eastern city (not for lack of trying, I assure you). It’s possible that the mission becomes more focused on cooperative play as it progresses, but what we played could’ve been ripped from any part of the game’s single-player campaign. Was it fun? Sure! It’s still Battlefield, right? While running between destructible cover, spotting enemies (now available in some of the campaign, apparently), and sniping from afar, I was having a great time.

But I wasn’t having an experience based in co-op. The closest we came was alerting each other to various snipers in the balconies above the street, or when one of us was downed, the other had to help revive that person. Perhaps I’d be more forgiving had I not played the direct competition’s parallel mode just a day prior, but for me — a fan of both series — it was clear which game’s co-op was built around co-op and which wasn’t. I have no doubt that Battlefield 3 will be a great game when it arrives this October, just don’t expect its co-op to rattle Spec Ops from the leader’s chair just yet.

In an effort to manage capacity on the day the MMO launches, Electronic Arts has capped the number of physical and digital copies of Star Wars: The Old Republic. The actual figure is unknown, but once it’s reached, no more will be sold until EA can add server capacity to accommodate more players.

Gamasutra yesterday got the publisher to confirm and clarify an earlier report of limited availability. “We are limiting launch quantities of Star Wars: The Old Republic to ensure players have a smooth and high quality game experience and service at launch,” an EA spokesperson told Gamasutra. “All versions of the game — physical and digital — are available for pre-order on a limited basis only. Once they are gone, they are gone.”

What this will mean, effectively, is that digital downloads over EA’s Origin service will be shut off. Physical copies, if you can get your hands on one, are still good after the digital shutoff.

Last month we heard rumors that pre-orders of the MMO would be capped at 500,000, with only the first 50,000 of them guaranteed, the rest queued in a prioritized waiting list.

MMOs can be victims of their own success, as past experiences have shown. In 2009, a “head start” program promising early access to Aion was overwhelmed by more than 400,000 preorders, leading to queue times stretching past seven hours. In February, Rift saw a similar situation, scrambling to add capacity after early-access users battled wait times of three hours before launch.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is due for a holiday 2011 launch.
